The goal of this council is to highlight youth voices to advance the state of arts education in New Jersey. We’re doing this by engaging youth with opportunities and content for them to advocate for stronger and more arts programming within their school. This council is led by Arts Ed NJ staff and facilitators Italy Ja’rae Lee and Liv Belasco, both alumni of the prestigious NJ Governor’s Awards in Arts Education for spoken word and advocacy, 11 Youth Arts Ed Leaders and approximately 35 members. Our members serve an integral part in making sure that the change and growth that we seek reaches far and wide throughout our state.

"Arts education means empowering creativity, empathy, collaboration, and self-expression in each student. Regardless of our career aspirations, creativity is essential to any field. Arts education has given me a place to destress, share my story, connect with others, overcome insecurity, embrace vulnerability, and find what I love."
"Music and band are an essential part of my life. It allows me to meet new people from all over New Jersey, and form friendships based on a common love of music."
We have seen a major decline in people interested in becoming musicians, and a decline of musicians auditioning for honors ensembles. Especially in my school and district, our marching band once won USBands Nationals IV and would always receive high placements in competitions and high praise and comments on the superior skills of our marching band, but after Covid we saw a decline of new members and a decline of passion for the thing that most of us truly love. I feel that it is important to share the benefits and joy of the arts and music to inspire people to continue pursuing music and strive to achieve honors in music and the arts and find a true passion for music and the arts.
"Arts education is my life! I feel advocating for and advancing arts education is important in New Jersey because that is the only way we can keep the arts alive and viable in our state. The more we are able to expose young people to the arts the more we can hope to grow the arts community in New Jersey and beyond. Advocating for the arts in New Jersey is how we are able to keep arts education in our school systems and grow future arts education advocates as well."
